Salmon and albacore tuna are rich in healthy natural compounds called omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have helped to reveal new details about how these components of fish oil help protect humans against chronic diseases.
In a previous study with laboratory mice, we investigated the interactions between two omega-3 fish oil, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)-and a third fatty acid, CLA (and trans-10, cis-12 CLA), which is included in some dietary supplements.
The test results with 50 mice for eight weeks showed that DHA protected the animals against two side effects of CLA: the insulin resistance induced by CLA, and disease of Nonalcoholic fatty liver induced by CLA. By contrast, the EPA offered only partial protection against the disease in nonalcoholic fatty liver induced by CLA, and offered no protection against insulin resistance.
Without treatment, insulin resistance can lead to diabetes. From 36 million to 57 million Americans have insulin resistance. Fatty liver disease can lead to cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. In a related study, we examined the results of dozens of studies of EPA and DHA. The researchers said the findings reported during the last decade have been inconsistent regarding the effects of EPA and DHA on insulin resistance in human volunteers.
